A Different Kind of Courage

One of the main points made (and made again) about the Free Amazons is the point that all women are not suited to earn their livelihood as mercenary soldiers or mountain guides. From the beginning these have been the most popular and visible Free Amazons; but there are many others, and perhaps the second most popular plot about Free Amazons is the story about the woman who establishes herself in a more traditional role, as healer.

Mercedes (Misty) Lackey lives in Oklahoma, and her main occupation is “computer programmer,” but she lists writing among her hobbies, along with needlework and sewing; she had had several stories published in the small semi-pro fantasy magazines (in these days of diminishing markets, that would count as publishing credit) and is a musician, having had several songs published in small folk-singing journals. She also tapes opera performances for us when they aren’t broadcast in the Bay Area. She calls her taste in music catholic, ranging from folk to opera; calls herself a “reformed chocoholic and inveterate Cokaholic” (knowing her, one is certain she refers to soda pop rather than illegal chemicals), and “would like to become good enough at writing to support (herself) without having to punch a timeclock.” Wouldn’t we all!
